WHEN Emmanuel Santos entered Jewish Care’s Creative Arts Studio space to teach a photography workshop, he opened participants’ eyes and lenses to their creativity within.
As the acclaimed photographer led the eight budding snappers on excursions with different photographic themes each week, the participants in turn developed their skills.
The result: the Sandra Bardas Memorial Exhibition, which opened last week at the Jewish Museum of Australia.
Titled Point of View, the installation features photos from participants in Jewish Care’s Creative Arts Studio, all of whom have mental health issues.
Exhibitor Sylvia Zuzowska said: “I always wanted to do photography. As a young girl in Poland I did a photography course. When Jewish Care’s Creative Arts Studio offered the Point of View workshop with Emmanuel Santos, I jumped from happiness that I would be able to do it again in my new country, Australia. I have learnt to express myself through the camera lens.”

AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced a $200,000 federal Government grant to the Jewish Museum of Australia on the occasion of Sir Zelman Cowen’s 90th birthday.
Rudd, who spoke at a birthday event for the former governor-general last week, said the donation would go towards the museum’s $1.5 million refurbishment of the Australian Jewish History Gallery, to be named in honour of Sir Zelman.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to Sir Zelman, who he said “committed immeasurably to the intellectual rigour of a nation” and remains a proud Australian and Jew.
“The one thing that defines Sir Zelman Cowen is a big thing,” Rudd said. “It is his sense of humanity. Sir Zelman’s warmth, his humility, his integrity and his compassion are the overwhelming themes when people speak of him.”

ICONIC Jewish fashion designers Josh Goot, Peter Alexander and Camilla And Marc will team up with emerging labels, including KBAD, Tali Roth, Lolla Palooza and JXCESS, for a parade at the Jewish Museum of Australia this week.
As well as serving as a JMA fundraiser, the event also aims to increase awareness about the museum with younger members of the Jewish community.
Titled the “Designers Collective Runway Show”, the event began as a small idea and has grown into a styled and choreographed parade, helped along by dressers, music coordinators and hair and make-up staff.
Models on the night will be from both professional agencies, as well as from within the community.
JMA events committee volunteer Yola Rose said: “It was anticipated the event would appeal to a cross section of the community and that people would delight in the opportunity to experience a first-class fashion parade celebrating Jewish designers, socialise with friends and at the same time support the JMA.
