TOO often people either don’t write their goals — and once they do, they don’t achieve them. Does that ring a bell?
Ask yourself, when you were 10 years old, would you have dreamt of being where you are now?
Is this dream coming true or is it a shade less than what you would have wanted? Perhaps it is a world away from any of your dreams and you’re wondering, “How did I get here?”
Wherever you are, this is your chance to change your game and make it happen. Grab this opportunity and make your life the way you want it to be.
Imagine achieving your wildest dreams — living with passion, purpose, action and determination.
A study was undertaken at Harvard University where graduates of the MBA program were asked to set clear written goals for their future. It turned out only 3 per cent of the graduates had written goals.
The researches went back to the students 20 years later. The three per cent who wrote down their goals had a net worth that exceeded the 97 per cent who didn’t.
I have two very close friends around my age, 37. They are very similar in so many ways but also very different. They both have higher education, smart, enthusiastic and loveable.
One of them still takes money from his parents, is dependent and quite depressed. The other has already purchased a house, travels at least twice a year and is very happy and optimistic.
The main difference between them is their vision. The successful one has a clear vision of his future and has set very specific goals.
Why you should write down your goals:
* Added clarity of direction
* Avoid procrastination
* Purposefully choose your life direction
* Give you clarity about whether you are on track, the way you want to be
* Get rid of pointless activities
I want you to write down your goals, which is not the same as New Year’s resolutions. What we are going to create here is goal setting, which will shoot you forward with a sense of momentum. This is for the long term.
The wheel of life (see chart) provides a wide vision of your life. You can see how you are going in each area. In some areas you might be very happy and others will want to create lasting change.
All you have to do is give yourself a score out of 10 for each area. This will help you to know in which area you need to focus.
When setting goals, you may want to set them in each area of the wheel, or you can make up your own
What’s important when creating a strategic plan for achieving lifelong goals?
“The change isn’t by chance, it is by choice” wrote Sharon Pearson –- we all have the power choose
We all have unlimited potential each individual in their own space. Many of us don’t fulfil it because we choose to do something else. Our power to choose is what gives us the opportunity to create the life we deserve right now.
A Chinese philosopher said: “It’s not what you know; it’s what you do with what you know.”
We need to accept the power we have within ourselves -– the power to choose. Once we accept that the sky’s the limit. As we make more choices we grow and when that happens unlimited opportunities present themselves.
Look at it this way -– every week I walk from Clovelly to Bondi Beach. When I start my walk I can’t see the end destination. The only way I can arrive at Bondi is to start walking.
You don’t need to see the end of your journey, only the next step. With every step you grow, you learn and get closer to your destination.
All you need to know is within you now
We all have the qualities within ourselves -– vitality, passion, courage, confidence, etc that when applied allow us to achieve anything.
Let’s say you made a decision to save money so you will be able to buy your son or daughter their first car when they reach 17. As the months pass you don’t save enough money and are very disappointed with yourself.
You decide that it’s not worth it and create a belief you are bad with money and always were. You quit and say that for you it’s impossible to save money.
A little while later a friend suggests you go see this amazing coach who is not only a coach, but also a rabbi. You decided to take his services and in the very first meeting he whispers something in your ear that changes everything.
You change your lifestyle completely. Now you are working extra hours, have a second job and move mountains with your bare hands.
What did the coach whisper that led to this total transformation? The coach being amazing at his job wasted no time. He pulled out a shotgun and whispered: “If you don’t do it I will shoot you and your family”
With a big enough reason why, the how will take care of itself.
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,” wrote Walt Disney
To overcome your fear you need to take action. I believe that each one of us has a purpose in this life to fulfil. In order to find our purpose we constantly need to learn, to contribute and to grow. In order to experience and find our purpose we need to take risks.
We must take action even when we don’t know with certainty that it will work out, we need to act courageously.
Courage is not needed whilst we do nothing, or deciding what we want or need to do. It is only needed when we start to act. The only way we can discover courage within ourselves is through the commitment to ourselves to continue to act even when we feel anxious or afraid.
The law of attraction -– what you focus is what you get
Your thoughts create your reality. If you think thoughts of lack, self-doubt, poverty, low self-esteem, depression etc then this is what you will experience in your life…
Once you change your focus and thoughts your feelings will change automatically and as a result everything will change!
Four years ago I bought a very small car – Toyota Starlet. I purchased it because I believe Toyota is a great carmaker and I loved its uniqueness. The next day I began to notice that so many people have the same car.
Has that happened to you before?
This is known as RAS (Reticular activation system). It is a part of your brain that filters out whatever is not important to you and brings your attention to things that are.
As a result people who don’t have goals seek only for things that are familiar to them. People who have goals filter in vehicles and possibilities that will help them to achieve it.
In my next blog I will provide you with four keys to achieving your outstanding outcome. There are some foundations to goal setting that when known and used can really make a difference.
If you are going to take this journey with me, you will need to be serious. Serious about radically changing the route of your life; serious about wanting to truly access your great, but maybe mostly dormant potential inside and a willingness to set it free.
You can write to me privately through my website www.corenergy.com.au or email at sean@corenergy.com.au and I will respond through the blog on this site.
Of course, I will never betray your confidences or divulge your identity. This means that my responses will not relate specifically to your unique circumstances, but I will be able to give general, practical advice on a range of issues including how you can improve your self-esteem, gain confidence, deal with colleagues at work, improve your personal relationships and deal with a loss.
In addition, I will –- when possible -– deal with your specific needs through private message to your mailbox. So let’s start the conversation. I look forward to hearing from you and to helping you transform your dreams into reality. It could be the start of the greatest adventure of your life.
