FORMER greats of the AJAX Football Club gathered at the weekend for a reunion of the 1979 and 1999 premiership sides.

President Brian Goldberg said he was hopeful legends like Rick Marks — who played in the 1979 grand final and coached the seniors to victory in 1999 — Mordy Bromberg, Barry Markoff and brothers Henry and Michael Ritterman would inspire the current playing group on to great things in 2010.

Goldberg, himself a member of the 1999 D-grade premiership side, said he was delighted at the chance to relive the halcyon days.

“I am excited to catch up with the club greats and my team mates and reflect on our glory days,” Goldberg said.

“They say that each year after the premiership your reputation and performance becomes more exaggerated. So now, 10 years on from the ‘99 premiership, we’re obviously superstars and the 79 team, well legendary status is an understatement,” Goldberg said with his tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Among the 1999 premiership players present at the event were stars Phil Goldberg, Marty Halphen, Andrew Kalinski and Anthony Rosen.
